Nearly 250 SEIU Local 1107 members, labor leaders, elected officials and community partners gathered Thursday, August 6, in support of workers who have been at the negotiating table since January 2026 with the largest, wealthiest healthcare system in the nation, HCA Healthcare. In blistering 108-degree temperatures, working people gathered outside Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center to demand HCA Healthcare invest in its frontline workforce through fair contracts, safe staffing standards, and competitive wages.
The informational picket marked the first in a series of coordinated actions taking place at HCA facilities nationwide. SEIU Union members, labor partners and supporters lined Maryland Parkway outside Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, owned and operated by HCA Healthcare, carrying signs and sounding the alarm about chronic staffing challenges, increasing workloads and growing concerns about the hospital’s ability to deliver quality patient care.
Southern Nevada Building Trades Unions affiliate, Teamsters Local 631 amplified the demonstration with a roving semi-truck around the picket and sounding its horn in solidarity with healthcare workers. HCA is the largest healthcare system in the nation, reporting $6.784 Billion in net income in 2025. HCA CEO Sam Hazen’s total compensation in 2025 exceeded $26 Million, which would take 420 years for the average worker to make what Sam Hazen does in a single year.
SEIU Local 1107, representing 5,000 healthcare workers at Sunrise, MountainView and Southern Hills hospitals, brought together a force of Nevada labor and community organizations, including, Wealthy Place Ministries, SEIU members from 121RN, Local 105, Healthcare Illinois, Nevada State AFL-CIO, Southern Nevada Building Trades Unions, Teamsters Local 631, SEIU Workers United, Make the Road Nevada, One APIA Nevada, Indivisible, National Action Network, and others.
“This informational picket is the resounding drumbeat that will echo throughout the nation and into halls of every HCA bargaining session across the country. It says we are SEIU, we are a community, we are strong, and we demand the Money, the Power, and the Respect that we deserve. Every healthcare worker deserves to be heard, deserves to be seen, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect,” said Michelle Maese, SEIU Local 1107 President.
“SEIU Local 1107 members are sending a clear message to HCA management - that working people are united, our community is standing with us, and we will not back down until we get a fair contract that reflects the value of our work and upholds our commitments to safe, quality care for our communities,” said Sam Shaw, SEIU Local 1107 Executive Director.
“My family lives in this community. My kids were out here until they got too hot. They get care at this hospital. I want this hospital to be the best there is for my family, for your family, and for the families inside this hospital. That is why I am out here.” said Jody Domineck, RN, Secretary-Treasurer, SEIU Local 1107.
Nevada AFL-CIO Executive Secretary-Treasurer Susie Martinez highlighted the strong show of labor solidarity at the informational picket, “This is what solidarity looks like, when working people stand together, we’re stronger together and no one can take that away from us”
“This is my district hospital, yet it serves the entire state of Nevada. Patients travel here to receive the exceptional care they get from our union members, and that’s why I’m here for the sixth time. If our healthcare workers are fighting for the fair contract they’ve earned through quality patient care, I will continue to stand with them.” SEIU Local 1107 Member & Assemblymember-elect (AD15) Miguel Dávila.

SEIU Local 1107 members will return to the bargaining table with HCA on Tuesday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 12 for negotiations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
