Last night, as the Las Vegas Aces took on the Chicago Sky, the energy inside T-Mobile Arena wasn’t just about basketball. It was about solidarity, fairness, and respect. SEIU Local 1107 members came together not only to support our hometown champions, but also to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the players’ union — the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA).
Our members wore bold shirts declaring: **“WE AGREE! PAY THEM WHAT YOU OWE THEM.” **
Because just like workers in hospitals, county offices, and public service jobs across Nevada, the players of the WNBA are fighting for what they deserve: **fair pay, fair treatment, and the dignity of their labor. **
The Aces are more than athletes — they’re workers. And like every worker, they deserve a fair share of the value they create. They fill arenas, bring pride to our city, and inspire a generation. Yet, women athletes have long been undervalued and underpaid compared to their male counterparts.
As a union of nearly 20,000 healthcare, homecare and public sector workers, we know what it feels like to have our labor undervalued. We know what it’s like to fight for every raise, every benefit, every safe staffing ratio. That’s why our struggles are connected.
When SEIU Local 1107 members rally around the WNBPA, we are saying something bigger: no matter the workplace — a hospital floor, a county office, or a basketball court — workers deserve justice.
Union Night was about more than just showing up for a game. It was about showing up for each other. Members in the stands, players on the court, and unions across industries — all part of a growing movement to demand equity and respect.
It’s about every worker who’s ever been shortchanged, disrespected, or told to “be grateful” for less than what they’re worth.
When we unite, when we link our struggles together, we build the kind of solidarity that wins. Wins at the bargaining table. Wins on the court. Wins in our communities.
