On a sunny Saturday in North Las Vegas, 16 proud members of SEIU Local 1107 suited up, stretched out, and stepped onto the court to represent our union at the first-ever Dodgeball Tournament hosted by the NAACP Las Vegas Chapter’s Legal Redress Committee at the Pearson Community Center.
Our team—The Solidarity Smackers—brought energy, unity, and a whole lot of fun to the court, playing multiple intense (and hilarious) rounds from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. From the first whistle to the final throw, we showed up with heart, hustle, and unwavering team spirit.
Decked out in custom-designed T-shirts by our talented member Richard Perez, our message was loud and clear: “We are SEIU Local 1107. You can’t dodge US!”
But we didn’t just bring players—we brought cheerleaders! SEIU Local 1107 was the only team with a dedicated cheer squad, led by our very own President Michelle Maese, and supported by a powerful group of caucus leaders and Executive Board members. Their energy on the sidelines reminded everyone that solidarity is a team effort—on and off the court.
The purpose of the event was just as powerful as the play. The tournament raised vital funds to expand access to legal aid for community members, continuing the NAACP’s long legacy of fighting for justice. We were also proud to stand alongside community leaders like Mayor Shelly Berkley, who showed up in support of this important cause.
As the day unfolded, it became clear that this was about far more than dodgeball—it was about community, unity, and collective action. From spirited chants to every dodge, dive, and throw, SEIU Local 1107 showed what it means to lead with passion and purpose.
We’re deeply grateful to the NAACP Las Vegas Chapter for turning sports into service, and for inviting us to take part in such an impactful and joyful event. To the teams we faced: thank you for the great competition and even better camaraderie. We may have taken a few dodgeballs to the chest, but we walked off the court stronger and prouder than ever.
Until next year—Solidarity Smackers, out!
